Safety Tips for Renting

anyrent.lk connects independent rental owners and renters across Sri Lanka. Whether you are renting a vehicle, heavy machinery, power tools, party tents, or property, your safety, security, and peace of mind are our highest priorities. Please review these essential guidelines before entering any rental agreement.

For Renters: Safe Renting Checklist

  • Always Inspect Before Paying: Physically examine the property, vehicle, tool, or machinery in person before making any advance or security deposit payments. Verify that mechanical equipment operates safely and that properties match description.
  • Verify Owner Credentials: Confirm the identity of the lessor by viewing their National Identity Card (NIC) or official business registration certificate. For vehicle rentals, check the revenue license and insurance card.
  • Get a Written Rental Agreement: Ensure all terms are documented in writing—including rental duration, daily/monthly rates, fuel/maintenance policies, return deadlines, and the exact refundable deposit amount.
  • Document Existing Condition: Take dated photos or video walkthroughs of the item or premises during handover in the owner’s presence. Note all pre-existing scratches, wear, or defects to prevent dispute upon return.
  • Never Send Money to Unverified Accounts: Avoid transferring money through bank deposit or mobile cash without meeting the owner or viewing the item. Be cautious of deals that seem unusually cheap or owners who refuse in-person meetings.

For Owners: Protecting Your Rental Assets

  • Verify Renter Identity & Address: Obtain a clear photocopy of the renter’s NIC or Passport, along with a recent utility bill confirming their permanent residential address. For vehicles and machinery, verify a valid Sri Lankan Driving License / Heavy Vehicle Operator permit.
  • Collect a Refundable Security Deposit: Always collect an adequate security deposit before releasing high-value items, tools, cameras, or vehicles to protect against accidental damage or late returns.
  • Provide Operational Instructions: Explain safe operating parameters for power tools, generators, and construction machinery to ensure the renter understands proper fuel mix, load limits, and safety precautions.
  • Sign a Handover Checklist: Have both parties sign a written checklist noting serial numbers, included accessories, meter/odometer readings, and visible condition at the moment of handover and return.
